When Esopus invited Sylvia Plimack Mangold to create a project for this special issue, the artist sent an email with the following proposal: “At the moment I’m working on an etching based on a watercolor done in the summer. I’m often trying to explain to people how the process works and just how much effort an artist and a printer put into such a project. I thought maybe we could do something that in some way demonstrates this process.”
Artist Sylvia Plimack Mangold’s paintings, drawings, and prints have been the subject of a number of museum retrospectives, one-person exhibitions, and monographs over the past 30 years; her work resides in many major public and private collections. She has taught at the Yale University School of Art and at New York City’s School of Visual Arts, and she is the recipient of an NEA grant. Plimack Mangold lives and works in Washingtonville, NY, and is represented by Alexander and Bonin in New York City.
