Robert Therrien’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, and the Kunstmuseum Basel, which presented a survey of the artist’s drawings in 2008. His artwork resides in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Therrien, who is represented by Gagosian Gallery, was born in Chicago in 1947 and received his M.F.A. from the University of Southern California. Based in Los Angeles for many years, he works in painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography, although he is perhaps best known for his enigmatically complex sculptures, often inspired by everyday objects and childhood memories. Therrien’s work has been the subject of numerous books and catalogs, including Robert Therrien (Rizzoli, 2008).
